Clip-In Hair Extensions: How to Wear, Style & Store Them
Clip-ins are the most beginner-friendly extension method out there. No stylist, no commitment, no damage — just instant length and volume you can put in and take out yourself.
What Are Clip-In Extensions?
Clip-in extensions are wefts of hair with small pressure-sensitive clips sewn along the top. You section your natural hair, snap the clips in underneath each section, and blend. A full set typically includes 7–10 wefts of varying widths to cover the whole head.

How to Put Clip-Ins In
Step 1 — Start at the Nape
Section your hair horizontally about an inch above the nape. Clip the rest of your hair up out of the way. Take your widest weft and snap it in along this section.
Step 2 — Work Upward
Release another inch of hair and repeat. Use narrower wefts as you move toward the crown and temples.
Step 3 — Blend
Let all your hair down and blend using a wide-tooth comb or your fingers. If needed, run a flat iron lightly over the join between your natural hair and the extension for a seamless finish.
Styling Clip-In Extensions
Because Amara Crown Hair clip-ins are 100% virgin Indian human hair, you can:
- Curl or wave them with a wand or rollers
- Straighten them with a flat iron
- Wear them in ponytails, half-ups, or loose
- Colour them if needed (though matching your natural shade is always recommended first)
Keep heat below 180°C / 350°F to preserve longevity
How to Store Clip-Ins Properly
How you store clip-ins has a big impact on how long they last.
- Remove them gently — unclip from the bottom up
- Brush through from ends to roots before storing
- Keep them in a silk or satin bag, or a dedicated hair extension hanger
- Never store them tangled or crushed
With proper storage and care, high-quality clip-ins can last 1–2 years even with regular use.
Are Clip-Ins Suitable for Black Hair?
Yes — the key is matching texture. If your natural hair is in its straightened state, straight or body wave clip-ins blend beautifully. For wash-and-go styles or stretched natural hair, look for a curlier texture that complements your pattern.
Clip-ins are also a great low-commitment way to trial extensions before committing to tape-ins or a sew-in.
Clip-Ins vs Tape-Ins — Which Is Right for You?
| Clip-Ins | Tape-Ins | |
|---|---|---|
| Application | DIY | Requires stylist |
| Wear time | Daily, remove at night | 6–8 weeks continuous |
| Damage risk | Very low | Low with proper care |
| Best for | Flexibility & occasional wear | Everyday length & volume |
